Mexican green tomato

In Mexico, the tomatillo is also known as green tomato, militomate or skin tomato and is an essential ingredient in Mexican cuisine.

 

The scientific name of this fruit is Physalis philadelphica and it is a first cousin of the tomatoes known around the world. The tomatillo is the fruit of a plant of Mexican origin that grows in warm seasons, so in many regions of Mexico it can be grown throughout the year.

The fruit is round, between 2 to 5 centimeters, and is covered by a thin shell that protects it from environmental conditions. When the fruit ripens it acquires a yellowish green color and its surface becomes much smoother and sticky.

Tomatillos are a fruit with which Mexicans make stews and sauces, this is due to its sweet and sour flavor, which has an intensity similar to that of lemon, making it perfect to accompany spicy or grilled foods. Likewise, the acidity of the fruit allows to give an acid touch to stews. 

It is said that there are many benefits of eating delicious tomatillos, here are just a few:
  • They contribute to the diet vitamin C, vitamin B3, phosphorus, potassium and iron.
  • They contain antioxidants and minerals.
  • They are an excellent source of dietary fiber.
  • In traditional medicine they are used to alleviate respiratory problems and the juice of tomatoes for earache.
