Get ready to dive into the world of this delicious Mexican drink!

The history of the michelada dates back to Mexico in the 1940s. Although its exact origin is somewhat hazy, it is believed to have emerged as a variant of another popular Mexican drink, the cerveza preparada. Prepared beer consists of mixing beer with lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and salt on the rim of the glass. Over time, this drink evolved into the michelada we know today.

The paternity of the michelada is a matter of debate, as there is no specific person credited with its creation. However, its popularization is attributed to the owner of a bar called "La Cucaracha" in Mexico City. It is said that this man began mixing beer with lime juice, salt and hot sauce, and thus the michelada was born. From there, the popularity of this refreshing drink quickly spread throughout Mexico and beyond.

The michelada has undergone a constant evolution, and today there are numerous variations depending on each person's tastes and preferences. Some of the most popular variants include:

  • Michelada Clásica: The original version of the michelada, combining beer, lime juice, salt and hot sauce. It is a perfect balance between salty, sour and spicy.
  • Michelada Cubana: Inspired by the flavors of Cuba, this variant adds canned clams and tomato sauce to the classic recipe. The result is a thicker and more flavorful michelada.
  • Fruit Michelada: Ideal for hot days, this variant incorporates fruit juice such as pineapple, mango, orange or strawberry to the classic michelada. It is a refreshing and flavorful option.
