Buscando Mole en Dona Maria
Mole Doña María's story begins in the 1950s in San Luis Potosí, when María Pons Nicoux de Degetau shared this exquisite dish with her family and friends, preparing it at home using traditional methods. Due to its widespread popularity, she decided to market it. To promote it, she selected handsome young men representing the beauty of Mexican women, dressed them in Chinese Puebla clothing, and sent them on a tour of the seven neighborhoods of San Luis Potosí to distribute samples of his exotic dish.
The positive results came quickly. The special way Doña María prepared her moles and the unusual way she promoted them proved decisive to their success. Growing demand led her to set up a small factory in a large house in the city center and establish Productos Marpe S.A., a name formed by combining the names of Doña María and her husband, Don Pedro.
The steady growth of the business was crucial, so in 1955 the company's facilities were changed and its name was also changed to Productos Doña María, S.A. The plant operated at this location for approximately 25 years, satisfying the demand of its consumers.
Doña María products grew and opened a market not only in San Luis Potosí, but also in Mexico City, Tampico, Monterrey and in some cities in the north and Pacific of our country.
Doña María decided to sell her brand in the 1970s to Don Enrique Hernandez Pons (Doña María's nephew), the owner at the time of Grupo Herdez, a man with a great business vision who focused his efforts on Moles and Nopales. He adapted the factory facilities to the necessary hygiene and quality measures, as well as the strict production standards of Grupo Herdez, without losing sight of the original Moles Doña María recipe. Ten years later, in the early 1980s, production capacity increased again, and the factory facilities were relocated once more to the industrial zone of San Luis Potosí, where production continues to this day.
