Marmota (2022) – Luis José Ramírez Cortés

From the series “Códigos Mexicanos”

A woman stands at the center—still, upright, present. Her gaze is calm and knowing, as if it carries stories older than words. Around her, a universe of movement unfolds: blue silhouettes dance, make music, work, and play. These are scenes of everyday life—fleeting yet timeless. Like memories, they float in space, like codes of a collective identity.

The central figure glows in gentle tones. Her turquoise dress, scattered with yellow blossoms, evokes earth and sun, celebration and warmth. At her center rests a dark circle—a sign of origin, of inner life, perhaps of the mystery of existence itself. Two childlike figures approach her with vibrant energy, as if wishing to enter her rhythm. Between them arises a quiet dialogue across generations.

In “Marmoto,” Luis José Ramírez Cortés condenses the everyday life of Mexico into a poetic visual language. The figures appear like pictograms of a living archive—people at work and in dance, in play and in ritual. Each carries a story, and together they form the beating heart of a community.

Born in Oaxaca, the artist studied Fine Arts at the Academy of San Carlos and completed postgraduate studies in Graphic Arts at the University of the Arts in Warsaw. His works have been presented nationally and internationally, including at art biennials.

In collaboration with Mexhaus/Ramirez Handels, original works are created around the theme “Everyday Life in Mexico.” “Marmoto” is a tender yet powerful homage to lived experience—to those quiet gestures and grand movements through which identity takes shape.

A work that not only is viewed, but remembered.
