Tamalera (2022) – Luis José Ramírez Cortés

From the series “Códigos Mexicanos”

In Tamalera, Luis José Ramírez Cortés brings an everyday scene from Oaxaca into focus. At the quiet center of the image, two women meet. One is seated, the other stands. Between them: the warm breath of the stove, the scent of corn, the simple gesture of giving. Tamalera tells of this modest moment in which daily life becomes meaning.

The colors speak softly yet clearly. Pink, turquoise, yellow, and blue glow like fragments of lived memory. The figures are not portrayed, but suggested—open to every story, every face. Around them shimmer faint silhouettes in delicate violet: musicians, vendors, children, passersby. They are like distant voices, like the echo of a market that never truly falls silent.

Luis José Ramírez Cortés transforms the ordinary into a sign. The small stove becomes the heart of the scene; the offered tamal a symbol of closeness, labor, and continuity. In the series “Códigos Mexicanos”, the artist preserves those fleeting moments in which culture is not explained, but lived.

Born in Oaxaca, Ramírez Cortés has devoted himself to art since his youth. After studying Fine Arts at the Academy of San Carlos and completing postgraduate studies in graphic arts at the University of the Arts in Warsaw, his works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at renowned art biennials.

Today, he works with Mexhaus/Ramírez Handels, presenting original works focused on Everyday Life in Mexico. A certificate of authenticity is included.
