Ritual (2022) – Luis José Ramírez Cortés

From the series “Códigos Mexicanos”

Two bodies caught mid-leap.
Two masks, half animal, half dream.
Arms raised, as if calling the sky down—or recalling a movement older than words.

In Ritual, Luis José Ramírez Cortés captures a moment in which the everyday tips into the mythical. The figures dance, fight, or celebrate—indistinguishable, bound together by rhythm and gesture. Their masks open mouths filled with teeth and color, as if they carried the voices of animals, of ancestors, of the earth itself.

The background is filled with shadowy figures. They move like silhouettes, like memories of many other rituals: work, play, music, walking. A quiet chorus of life that surrounds and sustains the scene. The blue of the space feels vast and timeless, a field in which past and present coexist.

With the series “Códigos Mexicanos”, Ramírez Cortés transforms cultural practices into visual signs. Ritual appears here not as a fixed ceremony, but as a recurring movement of life itself—as a dance between order and freedom, between human and animal, between community and individual.

The artist, originally from Oaxaca and trained at the San Carlos Academy and the University of the Arts in Warsaw, observes everyday life in Mexico with attentive closeness. His works have been shown in national and international exhibitions as well as renowned art biennials. Today, he works with Mexhaus / Ramírez Handels and dedicates himself to the theme of “Everyday Life in Mexico.”

Ritual is an image of transition.
A pause within movement.
A reminder that dance, mask, and gesture are ways of understanding the world — and oneself within it.

The work is available as an original from Mexhaus / Ramírez Handels. A certificate of authenticity is included.
