It is said that the recipe for punch has its beginnings in India, where it has the name of "Pac" and is traditionally composed of five ingredients: an alcoholic beverage, water, sugar, green lemon and tea leaves. Later, the Persians consumed a similar drink which they called "Panch" and when it arrived in Europe it got the name "Punch" in Anglo-Saxon countries and was subsequently called "Ponche" in Spanish.
With the conquest, the Spaniards brought this delicious drink and little by little it was adapted to the seasonal products native to the region. They added guava, tejocotes, tamarind, hibiscus, pineapple, prunes, apples and instead of using sugar, it is sweetened with piloncillo.
Currently in Mexico there are hundreds of varieties of punch recipes. Some recipes have alcohol and others do not, some are for the punch to be drunk cold and others to be drunk hot. Most are prepared with a base of juice or milk with fruits such as peach, pineapple, tejocote, prunes, among others. Among the most peculiar recipes you could find, we have those with egg, beer or coffee.
